Who created The Beauty Writer Workshop?
My name is Cade Pemberton. I have worked as a beauty writer for over 30 years in America´s top beauty corporations. In fact, I am a senior writer at one of the very best right now and loving it, even after decades in the business. I have written for over 40 different brands (that´s before I stopped counting - see my bio section for a partial list of the companies I´ve worked for). I´ve worked for years of my career both as a freelancer and as an on-staff, full time writer. In addition to corporate work, have worked for advertising agencies, public relations agencies, websites and for small independent cosmetic companies and entrepreneurs. I have written for every segment of this fabulous market from teen beauty to men´s grooming to hair care. I have written copy for the most high-end expensive lines and also for lines we all buy every day at the drugstore or on websites. I´ve written packaging, advertising, promotional materials, website materials, articles and press kits.

It´s a big market and there´s money to be made if you really know the beauty business. Writers who don´t have knowledge and experience in the industry are rarely hired, even freelance, because the beauty industry has its own language, its own marketing approach and, as in all businesses, insiders like to hire other insiders. My goal is to make you one of those insiders, too, with what you learn from The Workshop.

Why Did You Create The Workshop?
To teach others. Today, unlike in the past, very few companies or agencies can afford to hire a novice or junior writer and train them. Somehow, you are magically supposed to get your basic skills somewhere - but where? Copywriters today must be able to teach themselves new writing skills to break into the market and they have to be able to also job-market themselves successfully. The Workshop will give you an arsenal of ideas to get you started in your beauty career, whether you´re a total beginner or a writer who wants to add another specialty to your portfolio. The lessons give you a wide range of skills, insider knowledge, practice exercises, tips and suggestions you can absorb at your own pace, and repeat as many times as you need to, to really learn your craft.

What Makes Beauty Copywriter Workshop Unique?
Beauty Copywriter Workshop is the ONLY online workshop - and possibly the only class anywhere -- that specializes in copywriting for beauty and cosmetics. Yes, some generic "beauty writing" courses exist - but they focus on journalism -- writing for magazines and newspapers - which is probably the worst paying segment of the beauty writers market. You can earn far more working in agencies and corporations - or on your own as a freelance advertising/promotional writer.

Another point of difference: The Workshop does not offer an instructor who critiques your work and gives you homework. You download the lessons to read and do the work yourself at your own pace and to your own satisfaction.

However, if you need help, an explanation or further clarification of any aspect of a lesson, we´re only an e-mail away. We´ll reply within 24 hours.

Why is the Workshop Self-Directed?
Teachers and mentors are wonderful but few and far between. As a writer, in the real world, you´ll always need to update your skills yourself all the time. For example, 20 years ago, direct mail print advertising was a big part of the business. Today, there´s still lots of direct mail but the only mailbox it arrives in is a virtual one via email blasts and newsletters, podcasts, and text messaging. Compared to the old direct mail methods, writing for the digital age, means saying a lot in very few words. In this industry, new ways to reach the customer are constantly evolving. A good writer changes with the times. You must be a self-directed learner to be successful in this business. So you might as well start developing your self-sufficiency now.

Who Are The Workshop Students?
They range from absolute beginners and students still planning their careers to seasoned writing professionals who want to expand their expertise in a highly lucrative specialty - beauty and cosmetics. Many students live abroad, so The Workshop can be said to be a world-class beauty experience!

If you are wondering if you have what it takes to be a beauty writer, take our quick quiz on the home page.

Can Men Write For the Beauty/Cosmetics Field?
Absolutely. Talent is talent. It´s a fact that some of the most successful beauty and cosmetic writers working today are men. Most write for the women´s market because it´s still the dominant one, but the fast-growing men´s market will also offer men (and women) many, many new opportunities in the future.

How Is the Workshop Structured?
The lessons use 3 main approaches to help you learn:
1. Individual lessons of 10-20 pages each, on specific areas of the business. One chapter may be all about coming up with shade names and writing for color cosmetics, another will be on skincare, another will be on website writing and so forth. Every chapter is self-contained. Students who just want the basics in any area can buy a single lesson if desired.

2. Writing exercises, which are included in each lesson will give you a chance to try writing a package, an ad, a brochure, yourself.

3. Beauty field trips and adventures. We offer many suggestions for further research from going to local stores, or checking out websites to looking through magazines. They are the real "textbooks" of beauty that every good writer uses to keep current and up to date. We´ll show you what to look for and how to do your own research and never be at loss for an idea ever!

Our Philosophy
You bring the talent. We bring the rest. In teaching beauty copywriting to students, we have a method that´s based on real life experience in a wide range of professional settings from corporations to small businesses to agencies. We´ll take you from the fantasy of being a beauty copywriter to being the real deal.

We believe anyone can write for the beauty industry if they have 3 things: a sincere interest in beauty and cosmetics, good writing skills and ample opportunity. You provide the passion to learn and the inate talent. The Workshop will give you the skills to bring out that talent plus advice on finding and creating opportunities to practice your craft. It´s not rocket science - it´s lipstick! But after 30 years in the business, I still love it and so will you, if it´s meant to be your work. Even if you decide the beauty business is not for you after the class, you will have the essential skills of a good copywriter and be ready to make another specialty your own, like food or technology or travel. Because the skills are basic, your hard work won´t be wasted. The Workshop will get you started as a copywriter. We´ll show you how to generate ideas. We teach you how to create strong, compelling copy that sells. We teach you techniques you can rely on when inspiration fails. Above all, we explain how the beauty business - and by extension, many other businesses -- really works. With The Workshop, you can develop a fun, satisfying and fulfilling career as a cosmetics and beauty copywriter.
